Working on Your Dissertation or Thesis

The purpose of this page is to give you assistance with the dissertation/theses process.

If you need assistance search strategies, citation management, or systematic review searching, schedule an appointment with the Education Librarian, Chrstopher Lowder. Appointments require 24 hour notice.  We can meet face to face or virtually if that is more convenient.

University Dissertation & Theses Services

The University Dissertation & Theses Services (UDTS) is here to help you this this portion of your degree. All graduate and PhD students writing theses and dissertations are required to submit their documents to UDTS (udts@gmu.edu) for Format Review. The Format Review Deadline for the Spring 2024 Semester is 5:00pm EST on Friday, April 19.

The Process
These are the major steps you must complete in order to prepare, format, complete, and submit your thesis or dissertation. Not all Master's students are required to defend; please check with your college/school/department to confirm.  Click on the links below to read more specific information about each step.

Resources
Get templates to properly format your dissertation, thesis, or project, and schedule an appointment in order to graduate on time from the UDTS web page.

Workshops
To register for a UDTS workshop, please visit the library's workshop calendar. Workshops go over format templates and the submission process. They are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Data & Digital Scholarship Services (DDSS/DiSC)

Data & Digital Scholarship Services, helps researchers with creating, finding, and using datageographic information systems (GIS); research data management and sharing; digital humanities and digital project planning and management.

George Mason University Writing Center

The Writing Center

The Writing Center offers free writing support to Mason students, faculty and staff. Accomplished graduate and undergraduate students provide face-to-face tutoring, online tutoring, and workshops. They work with writers through all stages of the writing process from brainstorming and organizing to revising and polishing. To meet with a Writing Center tutor please schedule a virtual or face-to-face appointment.

ESL students who would like additional assistance can apply for the Writing Center's Opt-In Program.
