Where (and Where Not) to Publish

These databases are great resources for locating journals in your field. You can also use them to evaluate a journal's citation metrics or see how reputable they are. (Check with your colleagues and tenure committee for more information on journal publishing and promotion for your college).

Association of University Presses
AUPresses offers a number of useful resources and tools for scholars, in their roles as both authors and faculty members, from advice and references for finding a publisher, to answering questions about copyright and permissions, to tools for preparing manuscript materials

Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities This link opens in a new window
Provides current information to prospective authors for journals (the Libraries’ subscription only covers business and education subject areas), including scope/coverage, acceptance/rejection rates, number of reviewers, time required for review, availability of reviewers' comments, fees charged to review or publish the manuscript, copies required, manuscript topics and contact information. Users must enter their gmu.edu email and receive a code sent to that email for access.
Journal Citation Reports This link opens in a new window
Evaluates leading journals worldwide, in the sciences and social sciences. Compiles articles' cited references, to help measure research influence and impact at journal and category levels, and show the relationship between citing and cited journals. Part of the InCites platform available through Web of Science.

JournalGuide
JournalGuide is a free tool that helps researchers to evaluate scholarly journals. In addition to searching by journal name, category or publisher, authors can use the title and abstract of a paper to discover journals that have already published articles on similar topics. By matching journals to a paper’s content, researchers can see which journals would be most likely to have interest in their story
Directory of Open Access Journals
DOAJ is an online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals.

OA Publishing for Education

Open Access Publishing is the process of allowing your work to be accessible worldwide for free! This is a contrast to traditional publishing which often puts research behind a paywall. OA agreements are put in place to pay for fees associated with this process.

Mason Archival Repository Services (MARS) is an institutional repository. Many author agreements allow you to publish a version of your work in these repositories to allow free access.

Sherpa Romeo is an online resource that aggregates and analyses publisher open access policies from around the world and provides summaries of publisher copyright and open access archiving policies on a journal-by-journal basis.
