2023-2024 New and Expanded Resources

Due to budget reductions across the university, the Libraries have very limited capacity to add new resources. We continue to work with our consortial partners and with vendors to find creative approaches to expanding and updating our collections. The resources listed here are the result of those efforts.

New acquisitions via Foundation/endowment funds

The War on Poverty and the Office of Economic Opportunity: Administration of Antipoverty Programs and Civil Rights, 1964-1967 This link opens in a new window
This collection brings together a series of Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) collections that highlight efforts to meld the issue of civil rights and antipoverty initiatives. 1) Alphabetical File of Samuel Yette, 1964-1966: Yette was the Special Assistant to the Director of Civil Rights. Among his records are correspondence, reports, antipoverty program analyses, minutes of meetings, transcripts of testimonies, and other material. 2) Program Files, 1964-1967: These records consist of correspondence, weekly reports on civil rights matters, reports by civil rights coordinators, equal employment opportunity guidelines, and more. 3) Records Relating to the Administration of the Civil Rights Program in the Regions, 1965-1966: These records arranged by region > state > local areas and cities consist of correspondence between regional coordinators, various civil rights groups, labor organizations, members of Congress, and community groups regarding the activities of the OEO. City and Business Directories: Virginia, 1801-1929 This link opens in a new window
Provides historical, personal, and professional information about the inhabitants of a city and information about the city's civic, social, benevolent, and literary organizations.Comprehensive source of historical and personal information. Provides information on specific individuals with information such as addresses, city and county officers, heads of families, firms and names of those doing business in the city, lists of city residents, occupations, and street directories. Purchased with funds from the Randolph and Ellen Lytton Special Collection Endowment, the Washington and Northern Virginia Company of the Jamestowne Society Endowment, and the Catherine A. Baum Planned Community Archives Endowment.
Public Housing, Racial Policies, and Civil Rights: The Intergroup Relations Branch of the Federal Public Housing Administration, 1936-1963 This link opens in a new window
Public housing at the federal level was introduced in 1937 and was intended to provide public financing of low-cost housing in the form of publicly- managed and owned multifamily developments. This collection includes directives and memoranda related to the Public Housing Administration's policies and procedures. Among the documents are civil rights correspondence, statements and policy about race, labor-based state activity records, local housing authorities' policies on hiring minorities, court cases involving housing decisions, racially-restrictive covenants, and news clippings. The intra-agency correspondence consists of reports on sub-Cabinet groups on civil rights, racial policy, employment, and Commissioner's staff meetings. Purchased with funds from the Catherine A. E-books and museum catalogs from major galleries and university presses, covering scholarship in the history of art, architecture, decorative arts, photography, and design. Includes many out-of-print titles, key backlist, and recent releases from the world’s finest academic and museum publishers. Also includes peer-reviewed born-digital content, as well as image search functionality that cross references multiple publications contained within the resource.

Spanish Language film streaming platform with over 300 films from Spain and Latin America. The films are classified by subject and cover a broad range of themes, including art, history, environmental science, literature, and social justice. The films were specifically selected for teaching and some come paired with preselected scene clips and educational guides. Films have Spanish and English subtitles.

American Chemical Society (ACS): Mason corresponding authors may publish journal articles open access at no additional cost to the author. Covers all ACS journals (over 70 titles).
Springer: Mason corresponding authors may publish articles open access in some Springer journals (2043 out of over 2300 journals) at no additional cost to the author.
- The list of journals covered by VIVA’s OA publishing agreement is available here.
- Nature brand journals are not covered by this agreement.
- Mason no longer has any APC discounts with Springer's BioMed Central.
PLOS: Mason corresponding authors can publish open access in the following seven journals, at no additional cost to the author. The Libraries cannot cover OA fees for any other PLOS journals.

Includes more than 1,000 contemporary plays, from 2000 to present day.
Children's Magazine Archive, 1866-2020 This link opens in a new window
The backfiles of a variety of 20th-century serials covering many aspects of children's lives and interests. These include titles focusing on education, entertainment / literature, news, and religion / moral development. As well as shedding light on the history of childhood and family life during this period, these titles provide alternative perspectives in the study of 20th-century advertising/marketing, popular culture, education, media, and print culture.
Manuscript Women's Letters and Diaries This link opens in a new window
Personal writings of women of the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries, displayed as high-quality images of the original manuscripts and extensively indexed. The letters and diaries reveal, in each woman’s own hand, the details of the authors’ daily lives, their activities and concerns, and their attitudes towards the people and world around them. The collection is drawn entirely from the extensive holdings of the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts. Spanning 1750 to 1950, the database is particularly strong in nineteenth-century material.
Proquest History Vault: NAACP Papers: The NAACP's Major Campaigns--Legal Department Files This link opens in a new window
Consists of the working case files of the NAACP's general counsel and his Legal Department staff for the period from 1956 to 1972. The files document the NAACP's aggressive campaign to bring about desegregation throughout the United States, particularly in the South. In total, this module contains over 600 cases from 34 states and the District of Columbia. The cases in this module pertain to school desegregation, abuses of police procedure, employment discrimination, freedom of speech, privacy, freedom of association, and housing discrimination.
Religious Magazine Archive Basic Search page This link opens in a new window
A searchable archive of magazines devoted to religious topics, spanning 19th-21st centuries. The publications were originally written by/for a wider populace rather than academic/cultural elites and offer insights into, for example, the influence of belief systems on public life, the history of popular religious movements and the means used by religions to gain adherents and communicate their ideologies. A wide variety of religions and denominations are represented, allowing for comparative studies of religions during this period. Coverage: 1845 - 2015

Other additions

China Academic Journals Series G (Politics, Military Affairs, Law). The Law Library added a current subscription & purchased the backfile to 2021 and 2022. This fills in the gap in access from our prior cancellation.
Sunday Times Historical Archive. The Law Library has purchased additional digital access to the Sunday Times Historical Archive through Gale. We now have access to this digital newspaper from 1822-2021. We previously had access through 2016.
