From the dashboard, click on the items tab on the left hand side of the dashboard, or click the items link under manage resources.
You will be redirected to the items page that lists all of the items in this Omeka installation. In the upper right hand corner, click add new item.
You will need to fill out as much metadata as possible, including:
For each field, look at the helper text to determine what information to put in each field. You will most likely not be able to fill out all of the fields listed above, but fill out as many as you can with robust and comprehensive information. At minimum, you items must include a title, description (describe the source and why it is important), source (where you found the source, e.g., Fairfax County Courthouse, Thomas Balch Library, ProQuest Historic Newspapers - Washington Post, Virginia Chronicle, etc.), bibliographic citation, and contributor (your name).
To add media to your item, navigate to the media tab. There are several options for adding media, but you will be using the upload option. Click the plus sign next to upload. Select choose file and pick a file from your computer. You can add multiple files to your item. For example, if you have PDFs or JPGs of several pages from a book, you can add each of those PDFs or JPGs as media to that item.
In both the item sets and sites tabs, add your item to the proper item set and site. These tabs might be auto-populated with the proper item set and site already.
If your item is associated with a particular location, you can map that item using the mapping tab. Click on the magnifying glass to search for a particular address or area. The map will populate with a pin. See the Omeka documentation on mapping an item for more information.
Click add in the upper right hand corner when you're done.
You will be redirected to your item's page. You will see the item's metadata and media. If you would like to edit your item, click edit item in the upper right hand corner.
You can edit or delete your items from the items page. Click the pencil icon next to your item to edit it. Click on the trash can icon to delete it. A drawer will open on the right and you will have to confirm deletion. The ellipses icon will open a drawer on the right that includes a brief synopsis of the item's metadata.
