Finding Patents

Laser Surgery for Cataracts

I searched using laser surgery cataracts. This is just a simple search. It won't find a lot of the related patents. I limited it to the US patent office using the filter.

Patent applications

There are several applications. You can find out the status by selecting the title.

US patent application numbers begin with a year. Here are a few of the applications in the list:

Part of the Google Patent webpage for our patent example is shown. Let's consider some of the information that is listed.

Our example is the patent, Ophthalmologic laser device and method for preventing and treating aftercataract, and it has a patent number of US10478342B2. It lists the country as the United States.

It is obvious what inventors are, but I didn't know what an assignee was until someone told me. The assignee is the entity that owns the patent.

There are three inventors:

  • Manfred Dick,
  • Juergen Kuehnert, and
  • Matthias Reich.

The assignee is Carl Zeiss Meditec AG. Most likely, the assignee is the company that the inventors work for. The events can tell you when the application was filed, when it was granted, and what the status of the patent is.

The status of our example is active, so the patent claims are still legally protected. The claims list on the webpage (and in the patent) specifies what is protected. As long as they continue to pay the fees, the patent is active until 2033.

The abstract will help you determine if the patent is relevant. The abstract of our example is as follows.

"An ophthalmologic laser device includes a pulsed laser configured to produce radiation focused along at treatment beam path. A variably adjustable beam deflector unit and a focusing lens system are disposed in the treatment beam path. The deflector unit is configured to focus the radiation in different target volumes. Measuring equipment is configured to determine a shape and position of optical interfaces along a detection beam path. A control unit is configured to control the laser and the deflector unit and to implement steps including determining a shape and position of an interface of a membrane of a capsular bag of an eye located in a treatment area using the measuring equipment, determining coordinates of a target volume such that, on irradiation of the target volume, a pressure wave runs from the target volume to the anterior or posterior membrane, and adjusting the deflector unit to the target determined volume."

The information discussed on this page can be found on the first page of the patent itself. You can download the PDF of the patent or read the patent on the webpage.

ABSTRACT

An ophthalmologic laser device includes a pulsed laser configured to produce radiation focused along at treatment beam path . A variably adjustable beam deflector unit and a focusing lens system are disposed in the treatment beam path . The deflector unit is configured to focus the radiation in different target volumes.Measuring equipment is config ured to determine a shape and position of optical interfaces along a detection beam path . A control unit is configured to control the laser and the deflector unit and to implement steps including determining a shape and position of an interface of a membrane of a capsular bag of an eye located in a treatment area using the measuring equipment, deter mining coordinates of a target volume such that , on irradia tion of the target volume, a pressure wave runs from the target volume to the anterior or posterior membrane , and adjusting the deflector unit to the target determined volume.

8 Claims, 11 Drawing Sheets

There are numbers associated with each field. It is clear that

  • (54) is the title of the patent
  • (75) is the inventors
  • (73) is the assignee
  • (10) is the patent number
  • (45) is the patent grant date
  • (52) is the CPC classification numbers, which we will talk about next

Looking at the Cooperative Patent Classification.

The first three CPC codes in our example are:

  • A61F 9/0084
  • A61F 9/00825
  • A61F 2009/0087

We could search the broader code, A61F 9/008, and it would search all the narrower codes, as well as the broader one. However, I want to be more specific to get a smaller number of patents. I will search cpc:A61F9/0084 cpc:A61F9/00825 cpc:A61F2009/0087 to see if other patents use these three codes too.

Try the search, cpc:A61F9/0084 cpc:A61F9/00825 cpc:A61F2009/0087, in Google Patent.

In general, these results are more relevant to my topic.
