Update on ERIC Database

Update as of August, 2025

ERIC Reduction

In May 2025, as part of the United States government reduction work, the annual budget for the database ERIC was reduced by 49%. In June 2025, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), which runs ERIC, released an announcement that the database will no longer index 159 sources (58 academic journal sources and 101 non-journal sources).

Please note this change in ERIC’s indexing does not impact researcher’s access to the database, and all resources indexed prior to the May 2025 budget cut currently remain in the database.

References to thousands of educational topics. Indexes journal articles, books, theses, curricula, conference papers, standards, guidelines and more. ERIC documents (non-journal literature) are available full-text, 1993 to the present.

Journal Sources

Education Research Index
Education Research Index combines ERIC, the leading education research database produced by the U.S. Department of Education, with the new Supplemental Education Index, which was created to expand upon the current scope of ERIC. Together, they offer journal articles, reports, documents, books, all indexed with the ERIC vocabulary for a unified search experience. Coverage: 1966-current.

Non-Journal Sources (Grey Literature)

ERIC’s collection of grey literature, including white papers, think tank reports, and policy briefs, proved beneficial for researchers. While no database alternative provides comprehensive coverage for this literature, some alternatives offer partial coverage, including the following options:

Policy Commons
Database for public policy, with millions of reports, working papers, policy briefs, data sources, and media drawn from a directory of more than 20,000 IGOs, NGOs, think tanks, and research centers on disciplines including agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals, diversity, crime, librarianship, etc. Community tools allow users to upload, share, and discuss their discoveries.
Policy File Index
Access domestic and foreign public policy research and analytical papers on governmental and legal topics, representing the work of think tanks, research groups, and academic institutes from 1990 to present.
