FA 2024 Assignment

Cultural Diversity and Interview Project

As our society grows older and more diverse, it is important to learn about diverse groups and the perspective of older adults. To further your learning on diverse groups in the U.S. and your insight into the oppression they have faced, you will interview or observe an interview of an older adult (aged 65+) from one of the following groups:

  • Black, African or African-Americans
  • American Indigenous/First  Nation/Native Americans
  • Asian Americans
  • Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans
  • LGBTQ+ Individuals
  • Middle Eastern Americans
  • Pacific Islander Americans
  • Individuals with Disabilities

Objective: To focus on working with people who are older (gerontology) from non-dominant populations.

The assignment has three parts:

  • gathering information about the population from the literature
  • interviewing an older adult member of the population
  • integrating the background research with what they learn from the interview

Instructions for Part 1:

After choosing a population, review the literature on the population, gather information about the estimated size of that population among adults who are 65 and older, and learn about important service issues and needs for older adults in this group. You should use at least one government source (1) and one (1) scholarly journal article. Summarized findings should include:

  1. A brief background and demographic information about the population group and its 65 and older segment. Demographic information includes such things as
    1. estimated size
    2. marital status
    3. living arrangements
    4. education
    5. employment
    6. income
    7. health
  2. Description of three key social, economic, and health issues (one each) facing the population (ages 65 and older). Reference and cite academic sources to support this description.
  3. A brief description of a program found in the literature that would enhance the quality of life for the 65+ population.
