These guidelines provide a framework for helping students understand when and how to responsibly and ethically use generative AI applications, especially within their courses and degree programs. This guide will help you make informed decisions about AI use while prioritizing your learning outcomes and maintaining academic integrity.
As generative AI tools become more integrated into educational spaces, instructors across disciplines are faced with new possibilities, challenges, and responsibilities. These guidelines provide practical, policy-aligned guidance for George Mason University instructors on how to thoughtfully and ethically incorporate AI into their teaching practices.
All researchers at George Mason (faculty, staff, students) are responsible for ensuring the responsible use of AI in research in accordance with these guidelines. These guidelines apply to all sponsored and non-sponsored research conducted at George Mason University. Principal Investigators are responsible for ensuring that all members of their team adhere to these guidelines.
Some faculty may use AI detectors on work that is turned in for a grade, similar to plagiarism detection systems. However, the Stearns Center recommends skepticism about tools or programs that indicate a reliable way of detecting whether text, artwork, or code is fully or partially generated by an AI tools. Likewise, Mason Libraries do not endorse specific generative AI detection tools.
Chasing after "cheating" students, particularly as technologies continue to develop additional capabilities, is a losing game. Stearns Center continues to develop additional capabilities, is a losing game. Stearns Center continues to recommend that instructors invest their time in alterations to their courses, messaging, assignments, and support structures to encourage and enable students to engage in meaningful assessments of their learning.
