Find out where an agency's rules & regulations are codified
Regulations are codified in the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations (eCFR). The most up-to-date version of the CFR is the eCFR, updated daily.
The eCFR can be accessed on Govinfo.gov:
1. Go to https://www.govinfo.gov/
2. Click on the " Browse by A to Z" option on the homepage.
3. Click on the letter "E" or scroll down to the "E" section.
4. Click "Electronic Code of Federal Regulations" to open.
Once you open the eCFR (the electronic Code of Federal Regulations)
- Click on the "Browse" Dropdown Menu at the top of the page.
- Click on the "Agencies' link in the menu. Or go straight to https://www.ecfr.gov/agencies
- Search for your agency (control + F or command + F are helpful here).
- You will probably see more than one CFR citation next to your agency--that's normal.
A note on CFR citations:
A Code of Federal Regulations citation in the Agency List looks like this:
1 CFR Chapter II
A Code of Federal Regulations citation to a specific regulation would typically be more granular, like this:
16 C.F.R. §312.2 (2012)
Title # C.F.R. Part#.Section# (Year compiled)
