Census & Demographic Data

Use this guide to identify appropriate sources for population and census data.

Datasets & Microdata

The census data sources listed below are set up to be used with statistical analysis software (SPSS, Stata, etc.).

United States

  • Microdata Access Tool (MDAT)
    MDAT is the Census Bureau's microdata extraction tool. It allows you to select individual variables to develop customized tables and perform statistical analysis. Datasets included are: American Community Survey and the Current Population Survey.
  • IPUMS-USA (Minnesota Population Center)
  • Census microdata for social and economic research.  Includes American Community Survey and Census of Population and Housing.
  • IPUMS-CPS (Minnesota Population Center)
    Current Population Survey microdata. Can select variables and customize dataset before downloading.
  • U.S. Census Bureau Data Tools and Apps
  • American Community Survey Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS)
    Direct download of PUMS data files from the Census Bureau's ftp site. Download files by Region, Division, State, or Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs). If you prefer to select variables for download, use IPUMS-USA or MDAT.
  • Census Bureau data via ftp 
    Direct download of data files from the Census Bureau's various survey programs.
  • Current Population Survey (CPS)
    The primary source of labor force statistics for the population of the United States.
  • United States Census Data Data Repository at ICPSR.
    Contains hundreds of data files from the U.S. Census Bureau.
  • Data Sharing for Demographic Research (DSDR) A population health data archive at ICPSR.
