General Databases containing Science and Engineering Topics

What is a Database?

A database is an organized collection of structured information, or data, typically stored electronically in a computer system. from Oracle The structured information in these databases contains information about articles, books, etc.

Each of these databases contain or have links to many full text articles. If a specific database doesn't cover your topic, try a multidisciplinary one. Multidisciplinary databases can be used to broadly explore topics too.

Multidisciplinary Databases

Contain information of interest to many disciplines.

Academic Search Complete
Mostly undergraduate student level information. Contains peer-reviewed journals and other types of documents.
Compendex
Comprehensive coverage of engineering and technical topics.
ProQuest Engineering Collection
Contains engineering related articles. Indexes down to figures and tables.
Web of Science: Core Collection
Strict guidelines on what publications they include, so publications are quality. However, not all quality publications are in here, so you will find less information. Be sure to use more than one database.

Google Scholar
crawls "more scholarly" websites then Google, but not everything is scholarly. More work to determine if something is scholarly sometimes. Note: Be sure to setup to display library links for George Mason University Libraries to get full text articles.

IEEE Xplore
Provides full-text access to all journals, transactions and conference proceedings published by IEEE and IET. Accesses more than 1,000 books in the IEEE-Wiley eBook Library and IEEE-MIT eBook Library-Computing and Engineering Collection.
MathSciNet
Provides access to reviews, abstracts and bibliographic information for the mathematical sciences literature. Includes access to Mathematical Reviews and Current Mathematical Publications from 1940 to present.
Military and Government Collection
Offers current news for all branches of the military, through a thorough offering of periodicals, academic journals and other related content. Content also includes country reports and relevant government documents.

InterLibrary Loan Requests (ILLiad)
If a journal article or conference paper is not available electronically or a book isn't available through the WRLC, use ILLiad to request the item.
