American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Citation Style

Format of Journal Articles

Prefer to watch a video, try the video, How do I know it's a journal article from the citation, on Kaltura. It gives APA and IEEE Citation Styles as an examples. However, it doesn't matter; it still has the same information that is needed.

You must have (or follow rules when it doesn't exist)

  • Authors
  • Year of publication
  • Title of the article
  • Journal name (its abbreviation if not using a reference manager)
  • Volume
  • Pages or paper number

You need if it exists

  • Issue
  • DOI
  • URL if no DOI and electronic access only (no paper copy)

Most journal articles will appear as follows in the reference list.

Last name, A. A., and B. B. Last name. Year. “Article title.” Abbrev. Journal Name, volume (issue), pages or paper number. https://doi.org/DOI.

Chen, Y., and P. Lin. 2019. "Bayesian network of risk assessment for a super-large dam exposed to multiple natural risk sources." Stoch. Environ. Res. Risk. Assess., 33, 581–592. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00477-018-1631-0.

Journal articles published by ASCE have a slightly different format according to Publishing in ASCE Journal. I would just use the same format as journal articles that aren't from ASCE If it isn't for formal publication with ASCE.

Paulina, C. L., L. Upmanu, and H-A. M. Amin. 2023. "Needs for portfolio risk assessment of aging dams in the United States." J. Water Res. Plan. Manage., 149(3), 04022083. https://doi.org/10.1061/JWRMD5.WRENG-5673.

If an article is available but not published yet, some of the fields won't be included. Use Forthcoming for the publication year. These examples are from Publishing in ASCE Journal with a DOI added to the journal article not published with ASCE.

Smith, D. O., J. E. Lee, and E. M. Kim. Forthcoming. “Influence of the geometric and material characteristics on the strength of chestnut timber joints.” Mater. Des.https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matdes.2008.06.041.

Han, C.-Y., J.-H. Wang, X.-H. Xia, and J.-J. Chen. Forthcoming. “Limit analysis for local and overall stability of slurry trench in cohesive soil.” Int. J. Geomech. https://doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)GM.1943-5622.0000268.

Troubleshooting Zotero - Journal Articles

Zotero works well with journal articles in ASCE Citation style. There are only two things to look for:

  1. Is there missing information that didn't import into your Zotero database?

Make sure that all the needed citation information is filled out in Zotero. The list of fields needed is on this webpage.

  2. Is the article title field not written in sentence case?

Sentence case is written as you would write a sentence.

Zotero doesn't detect proper nouns and acronyms, so it only forces the first letter of the first word to be in uppercase. Nothing is forced to lowercase. Be sure that the information in the title field appears exactly like it will in the reference.
