About Kanopy

Kanopy is a streaming media platform offered through the library. It contains thousands of videos, including films, documentaries, and educational content. Kanopy operates on a request-only model, meaning the Libraries will purchase or renew licenses for Kanopy films specifically requested by faculty or instructors for use in class. Once a license is purchased or renewed, a Kanopy video remains available for one year to the entire Mason community. Faculty/instructors can link to Kanopy videos on Blackboard or their syllabi.

Request & Access Kanopy Videos

Only faculty and instructors may request films through Kanopy. If you are a student and need a film for a course assignment, please talk with your instructor.

If you are a faculty member/instructor and would like to use a Kanopy video, start by searching in Kanopy to check its availability. You will be able to see the entire catalog. Click on the film you need to check if it’s already licensed:

  • If your film will play, the Libraries have a current license. Videos have different expiration dates depending on when they were requested, so your video might need to be renewed to ensure continuous access.

  • If you see the message “This film is not available yet,” please fill out the request form below the video player. Be sure to state you are a faculty member/instructor and specify how you will use the video.

Please check for film availability and place any Kanopy requests at least 3 weeks before the video is needed.

Please keep in mind that these videos are high in cost, the library budget is limited, and we are currently receiving a large volume of requests due to the online transition. We encourage faculty to use other video resources when possible and to only request Kanopy films which are essential to their courses and research.

Please contact the Media Specialist, LeighAnn Skeen, for specific questions and requests.
