How to View Materials

The Special Collections Research Center is located on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University in Fenwick Library Room 2400 (2nd floor). The Special Collections Research Center is open to the general public. 

Researchers can make an appointment in advance by emailing the Research Services Coordinator. Walk-ins are also welcome.

All researchers must complete a Researcher Registration Agreement and provide a photo ID prior to using the collection.

Access Policies

  • Researchers must fill out Document Request Forms in order to look at materials, and are limited to 1 box at a time.
  • Researchers agree to handle all library collections gently and carefully and to keep loose documents in the order they are found.
  • Researchers may not under any circumstances remove collection materials from the reading room.
  • All food and beverages (including water bottles) are prohibited in the Reading Room
  • Laptops are permitted, but personal scanners are not allowed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started using collection materials in SCRC?

First-time researchers must register with SCRC before viewing collections in the reading room. Part of the registration process is presenting photo identification to our staff for making a copy and filling out a Researcher Registration Form.

I am planning to visit SCRC to look at collection materials. Do I need to make an appointment and/or request my materials in advance?

Researchers are encouraged to make an appointment and request materials in advance, but walk-ins are always welcome.

May I photograph or scan materials in SCRC for my own use?

Laptops are permitted, but personal scanners are not. Digital cameras may be used with permission from SCRC staff and user's agreement to terms of use.

How do I cite materials from SCRC in a publication?

Use the preferred citation listed under Administrative Information in each finding aid. For example, the preferred citation for the Oliver F. Atkins Photograph Collection is:

Can I see collections online?

Unless otherwise indicated in the finding aid or listed on the digitized collections pages, collections have not yet been digitized and cannot be viewed online.

How can I see collection materials that are not available online?

SCRC is located in Room 2400 of Fenwick Library at George Mason University’s Fairfax, Virginia Campus. SCRC is open and available to the general public for use in the reading room.

If I am unable to visit SCRC, is there another way to see collection materials that are not available online?

Options, including duplication, may exist for seeing collection materials without visiting. These options are dependent on the specific materials that are relevant to your interests. The first step is to examine the finding aid for the collection in order to select materials of interest, and then contact the Research Services Coordinator with your request.
