SearchTips for Library GIS & Statistical Data Collection

  • Use the catalog to find our GIS dataset holdings (CD-Rom or in digital files) - Search using the Advanced Search Option for more accurate results e.g. "geographic information" (or GIS) AND "fairfax county" (a place name).
  • Use the Libraries Geodata Server to download individual layer data for local Northern VA County GIS datac or restricted GIS data sets collected by the libraries (GMU affiliates only).
  • Check GIS Data on the Web to GIS data sites available on the web. 
  • Check Geolytics Census CDs to extract data (including Census boundary files) and create thematic maps.
  • Check Databases in Data and Polls for other data resources.  
  • Check also Data Sources by Subject (Mason).

Online Data and Mapping Resources [GMU affiliates only]

  • SimplyAnalytics: Create maps and download data for US Census (1980- ), MRI market and consumer survey data. Download Census Boundaries in shape file.
  • Landscan Database: Provide World population data in GRID format (2000 -  present) & yearly based raw data is available based on request (contact Joy Suh).
  • Social Explorer: create maps and download data (including geodata) related US Census (1790 - ) and religion.
