Getting Help with Citation Software

There are a few ways you can get help with your citation software issues:

Take a Workshop  Library staff teach regular workshops on Zotero. These workshops go over the basics and will teach you enough to get working with the tool to organize your information and citations.

View Online Tutorials The online tutorials in this guide are screencasts that show key tasks to get you up and running with the software.

Talk to Your Liaison Librarian The liaison librarian for your department knows about Zotero, and will be able to help you with your information organization needs.

Ask at the Reference Desk Staff at the reference desk at any of the four libraries can walk you through most issues you might be having with Zotero. You can come in person or call the reference desk and we will help you troubleshoot the issue.

Installation & Setup

Q: I want to create my own tags, and don't want Zotero to include keywords or subject headings from the databases and catalogs I use. How can I change the default setting?

A: Choose the Actions menu, under the gear icon, then choose Preferences. Deselect the box "Automatically tag items with keywords and subject headings.

Q: I'm using Zotero, but I can't seem to cite my library in my documents. What am I missing?

A: You need to download and install the plug-in that integrates Zotero with Word, Open Office, or WordPress. You can find the plug-in at: http://www.zotero.org/documentation/word_processor_integration

Q: I just bought a new computer, and need to transfer my Zotero library. How do I do that?

A: On your old computer, choose the Actions menu, under the gear icon, then choose Preferences. Select the Advanced tab and click "Show Data Directory." Copy this folder onto portable media, such as a USB drive, and move it to the data directory for Zotero on your new computer.

Errors

Q: I downloaded Zotero, and now I can't seem to do a direct export of my records from a database into EndNote. What's going on, and how can I fix it?

A: Zotero is intercepting the RIS file used in direct export to EndNote. Simply open Zotero, choose Preferences from the Actions menu, and deselect "use Zotero for downloaded RIS/Refer files."

Q: Some of my citations in Zotero look kind of wacky; the authors are all messed up. What's going on?

A: Check to make certain that the information is listed correctly in Zotero. Sometimes authors get imported inconsistently as contributors and authors, or some similar data error. That will affect the way the citations appear. Fixing the record should fix the citations.

Library Management

Q: I share my computer with other people who need to use Zotero. Can we keep our libraries separate?

A: If you have separate profiles set up on your computer, it will be easy to keep your libraries separate.

Workshops

Q: Who can come to the workshops?

A: Anyone affiliated with George Mason University may attend.

Q: How do I register for a workshop?

A: Go to http://ittraining.gmu.edu, view workshops and click on the register link next to the workshop you wish to register for.

Q: Can I bring my laptop and use it during the workshop?

A: It is better to learn on the instruction room computers, then transfer your knowledge to your laptop. Due to the amount of information we cover in a session, there may not be time to troubleshoot issues with your setup if you are using your laptop. We would be happy to schedule time to help you with those issues outside of the workshop.

Q: Can I have someone in the library do a workshop specifically for my class?

A: Contact your liaison librarian to talk about scheduling a workshop for your students.

Q: I really want to take a workshop, but none of the times work for me. What can I do?

A: You can work with someone one-on-one, or use our online tutorial information. Contact your liaison librarian to schedule a one-on-one.

Migration

Q: I need to move my data out of EndNote® into something else. How do I do that?

A: We have a quick guide to assist Mason users with transferring their data out of EndNote®. Note: since the University no longer has an EndNote® license, you will need to do this with a personal copy of EndNote on your computer.
