Installation & Setup

Q: I want to create my own tags, and don't want Zotero to include keywords or subject headings from the databases and catalogs I use. How can I change the default setting?

A: Choose the Actions menu, under the gear icon, then choose Preferences. Deselect the box "Automatically tag items with keywords and subject headings.

Q: I'm using Zotero, but I can't seem to cite my library in my documents. What am I missing?

A: You need to download and install the plug-in that integrates Zotero with Word, Open Office, or WordPress. You can find the plug-in at: http://www.zotero.org/documentation/word_processor_integration

Q: I just bought a new computer, and need to transfer my Zotero library. How do I do that?

A: On your old computer, choose the Actions menu, under the gear icon, then choose Preferences. Select the Advanced tab and click "Show Data Directory." Copy this folder onto portable media, such as a USB drive, and move it to the data directory for Zotero on your new computer.

Z39.50 Connection Information

Z39.50 is a communications protocol, standardizing the way two computers communicate to transfer bibliographic information. You can learn more by browsing the Z39.50 site maintained by the Library of Congress.  Examples:

As a library user, what does that mean?

  • If you're using the Mason Libraries catalog web interface then Z39.50 has little relevance.
  • If you're using a package like Bookwhere or EndNote then it is very important. Those packages (and other Z39.50 clients) can "talk" natively to our library system.
