"Information that identifies the geographic location and characteristics of natural or constructed features and boundaries on the earth." so called, geographically referenced data. From FGDC Glossary.

What are Geographic Information Systems (GIS)?

Geographic Information Systems is a computerized database management system that deals with information associated with geospatial data. It integrates, stores, manipulates, analyzes, and displays geospatial data visually.

The definition of GIS varies however.
